Engineers begin drilling the world’s deepest hole.

In 1970, the Soviets began drilling the Kola Superdeep Borehole project, which reached a depth of 12,262 meters (7.5 miles) by 1989, making it the deepest hole on Earth and the deepest hole ever dug by humankind.
