The Statue of Liberty was originally intended for Egypt. Sculptor Frederic Bartholdi was inspired by the pyramids and wanted to construct a lighthouse twice the size of the sphinx. The statue was to be of a peasant woman holding a torch to the sky. But Egypt went into debt before it could finance the project.
